Get excited for winter! Experience the thrills of volunteering in the adaptive snowsports community in this action-packed video I made about the New England Healing Sports Association:
Adaptive sports programs, which provide opportunities for those with disabilities of all kinds to be active, are frequently fueled by volunteer power. I’ve spent four wonderful seasons as an instructor with the New England Healing Sports Association (NEHSA) at Mt. Sunapee in Newbury, NH, and had a blast making this (obviously Warren Miller-style) ski (and snowboard) movie all about it.
At NEHSA, it takes only three insanely awesome full-time staff members to coordinate volunteer instructors in providing hundreds of ski and snowboard lessons AND keeping an equipment rental shop running 7 days a week all winter. Our students run the gamut from first-timers to first-time-in-awhilers to fierce competitors, and we’ll take pretty much anyone who walks, rides, or rolls through our door. Volunteers are offered free training clinics before and throughout the season, on-the-job learning is a part of every lesson, and new instructors never go out alone – so there’s no reason to be intimidated!
As winter gets underway, check back here for more tales from NEHSA as well as other adaptive sports programs.
Not a winter person? That’s okay, I guess we can forgive you…as long as you come back in a few months to learn about our kayak program!
